Is a College Degree worth it…here’s my story what do you think?

Most of my friends having been paying their school loans back for years..and some have screwed that up.

Any way I just have a HS diploma and I make over 190K, I’ve had 3 different jobs since I was 21…the truth is I lied about my college background and no one has ever checked it out. The current company I work for (marketing btw) never checked it out or asked me about my “degree”. Last year after I finished first in sales in our office (the 5th year in a row) I came clean with my boss….he just laughed and said he didn’t give a damn…just show me the MONEY-BABY is all he said. I’ve recieved numerous offers from competiors through my career but I’ve turned them down…even when it’s been more money but they want me to move my family…my wife doesn’t want to move.

Well……..there’s my confession, I used to worry that I’d be discovered but I could care less now and I thank God I didn’t waste 100K plus on a worthless piece of paper and saddled with huge college loans paying the

In my day job, I sometimes help individuals who are suddenly laid off from their job. The company moved to Mexico, downsized, etc. Usually, the first to be laid off are those with only a high school diploma. Some are younger, in the prime of their earning career, who – after the initial shock of the low starting salaries – simply find another job and move on.

Then there were the Joe’s. Joe’s are in their mid 40’s or above. They have a lifetime of working experience at one or two companies making big bucks. When laid off, Joe knew he had excellent work experience. He remembered he found jobs (usually higher paying) very quickly in his younger years.

My role was to explain to people their options after the lay off and discuss future career goals. Quickly, Joes would ask starting salaries for careers and laugh at what realistically they’d be offered as a new grad. You see, Joe was used to earning 3X as much with only a high school diploma. He was also used to having high status and several perks in his job because he had been there so long.

What Joe didn’t realize is he wasn’t as young as he once was, that the world was not the same as it had been only a few years ago.

I’m not saying you are a Joe now, but one day, one day, you might be. This story is so fresh in my mind because yesterday Joe came to see me in my office. He had been middle management at a local company for years and had earned a good salary. He left the company with a decent layoff package because he had been there so long. I remember when I first interviewed Joe, he decided not to take the educational benefits. But once the money ran out, Joe didn’t cope well, he didn’t find a job as he had when he was young and he was a tad to early for retirement. Soon his wife left him, he lost everything.

Unfortunately, Joe wasn’t there to use the educational benefits that were offered to him years ago, (the deadline had long since expired). Joe came to my office to deliver my pizza.

My advise: If you are earning 190K a year, there will be no need for you to borrow money to get a degree. Go, even if it’s an associated degree, so you are less likely to be a Joe. Right now things are looking fine, but you are young, you’re prob beautiful, high energy, and hip, but when you get older the world of work will not look at you the same.

Oh, and P.S. The higher up in mgmt I get, the more I realize how many managers are above me. Just pray your bosses’ boss and HR have the same feelings about your little fib as he does. Some corporations have policies in place that say if you lie on an application you suddenly become a Joe.

Good Luck – I hope you have a long and great career.

Well, he would possibly say he does not care, however he can use it in opposition to you in case you attempt to depart. If you’ll be able to be employed through a different location with them realizing you do not need the measure and lied in your software, then extra vigour to you. Notice that you simply are not looking for the measure given that you have discovered anything you are GOOD at that you’ll be able to generate profits at. That does not occur with so much persons. College is meant to aid a character discover there course or course (intended to). As lengthy as you maintain doing precisely what you do, and the area does not difference, you can be great.

It is not a college degree which defines success. Your story is just one of admittedly not many that remains a source of amazement, in the context of societies conventions and stereotypes. So before I go on, allow me to congratulate you on your achievement — keep it up. Going back, the reality of the job market is that employers rank a degree high in their list of “qualifications.” I believe that this is unfair, but it is the reality. There remains a wide perception that people who fail to complete or earn a college diploma are doomed to be always one step behind those who do. (nothing could be further from the truth.) So, yes, in the context of the present world, a college diploma is important. Heck, even more importance is attached to a Masters and Doctoral Degree! However, in my book, the diploma is but a piece of paper. What matters is the person’s abiities, whether he has that piece of crap or not.

thank god you’re making tha kind of money!!!!!!!! but beware its always possible that lying can cause you to loose your job and good reputation. if you feel like you need the college education go ahead and get it. it always looks good on apps. if you’re afraid of not having one, because you said you do have one, go ahead and get it. just do it a little at a time so that you don’t put yourself in financial difficulties, even at 100 k a year that can happen. and listen to your wife she holds the fort, and whether you know it or not, is the backbone of your household whether or not she has a job. most important——- be happy, you got 1 job you can always get another, regardless of the pay. i ought to know we have similar circumstances.
