There is a big difference between the fantasy life he imagines with you and the real life that he has. In the real life, there are financial worries and relationship worries and lots of uncertainty, and there is no guarantee that he will ever come to terms with that. But those things are also never going to go away – there are always going to be things to buy, money to save, tasks to accomplish. There are always reasons NOT to get married. You need to sit down and ask him, gently, whether he is serious about getting married, and if so, then to set a date. You don’t need a ring or a fancy proposal – you have a child who deserves some stability. Don’t make it an ultimatum, but open up the subject for conversation: “John, I love you, and I can see you being an important part of my future. I’m very confused by how hot and cold you are on the subject of marriage. Do you really want to get married in the next year or so? If so, let’s make if official – for us and for Bobby.” If your boyfriend is unwilling to commit to a date, then he is not ready to commit to you and your son in a serious way, no matter how much he may love you both. It’s easy to love someone who never asks anything of you. You then need to decide if you are willing to wait, knowing he may never ask you to marry him, or whether you need to find someone who is on the same page as you are in terms of future plans.

Always be early with your FAFSA. You can apply for that as of Jan. 1st. That means, you (and your parents if they still claim you) need to have your taxes done ASAP. This way, you will be in the first group that is considered for work-study jobs.

Also, go to your department that you are majoring in. Sometimes individual departments offer scholarships.

Also, working part-time (or full time if you can swing it) is helpful, even if it is off campus. I recommend you try to work in the field that you are interested in because it can give you an advantage, say, for an internship down the road (and it looks good on a resume).

Best of luck.

Fill out the FAFSA form, check to see if there’s a state financial aid company (there’s one in my state and they give grants each year).

I’d go talk to (or call) the financial aid office at the school you are planning on attending. Most schools have their own scholarships and grants that you can apply for, and they will let you know of all the ways you can help pay for school.

Some of your tuition money is going to be paying these financial aid employees. Take advantage of them and go talk to them.

Good luck!
