For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb says that the database is ideal for “students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices.” You may be able to find grants from private foundations.

You need to have a long talk with your high school guidance counselor immediately. You need to take the ACT or SAT to find out how likely you are to be admitted to various schools. They look at your GPA, your test scores, and your outside activities. You didn’t say if you live in TN or just want to attend a school here, but there are lottery scholarships in some states if your qualify. There may also be need-based scholarships. Until you take the ACT or SAT, you won’t know if your qualify. If your parents are completely unable to help you pay for college, you may have to do it on your own. That means working while attending college, and the best place to do that is in your hometown. You need to save money by living at home, working as many hours as possible, and attending community college. Cut back on wasteful spending (like eating out, movies, shopping) and save every cent you can. By attending community college for the first two years and making good grades, you might save enough and qualify for scholarships at the private college for the last two years. Don’t wait. Talk with your counselor this week. You are already into your senior year. Time is short.

If you have completed the FAFSA form and received little in assistance, it pretty much taps out federal financial aid help. However, you might want to search your state government website. Another way to get more money for college is to apply for the work study program and take a job on campus. The last alternative is to apply for outside or private scholarships.
