How much financial aid can I expect to get?

My expected family contribution is 0 and I don’t make much money at all. When I went to a community college I recieved about $4000 per year, but I want to apply for a 4-year university. Do you get more money for a 4-year school? I need to know what kind of schools to apply for because no sense applying for some private college if I can’t afford it.

Depends which aid you are talking about. The 4000/year is most likely the Pell Grant which is provided by the Federal Government to students with need, but the maximum amount is $4,050. I current attend Piedmont Technical College but I had applied to a 4-year private University.

Comparing financial aid, you usually receive more aid from a 4-year University than a technical/ community colleges. Four year colleges have more scholarships and grants. They typically have grants if you have need and apply early. The reason, is that universities receive more money from donors and the state. They have merit scholarships (academically gifted students).

Your best bet it to apply early in the next few months, but before December. Apply to an in-state public university is the university has a major of your desire. If you must go to an out of state college, San Jose State, Florida State University are good Universities for aid.

It really depends on a lot of factors… the school, the government, etc. Last year, I had 0 contribution from my parents and barely made any money, and I went to a school that was 18,000 for the year, and ended up having to get a student loan through a bank for 13,000… but at the same time, there are people that barely have to pay anything else.
