Have you talked to the student loan company? Call them, and tell them what’s going on. Explain that you want to make payments, but the payment schedule they’ve arranged leaves you with very little for food and rent. If you have dependents, make sure you let them know. They may lower your monthly payments.

Lenders really respond when you let them know you’re in financial trouble. Something like 90% of people with foreclosed homes never took the time to tell the bank they were having trouble.

Sounds like you had trouble with the credit cards, not with the student loan. Take this as a learning experience to never charge more than you can pay off at the end of the month.

Look, most people that go through college today do so with student loans.

You have ten years to pay back this money or it becomes all due on the ten year anniversary of the note.

I had to do it most of us had to do it.

you should too.

Its the credit cards that got you in trouble not the student loan.

Additionally,

All the items you speak of have happened to many other families in far worse conditions than you.

We all have the sob stories. I have many, my wife has been fighting cancer for two years, I have had shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff, I have one in college with three others getting ready to go. etc etc etc

You still are required to spend less than you make in this world or else you find yourself in debt.

If my college educated (Student loan funded) butt didn’t have a steady job for two years my wife would throw me out of the house, and I feel I would deserve it.

Just stop spending more than your making, or if you do then go out and make more money.

I wish you good luck, even though I feel a bit bothered by this as I am one of those students that paid back every penny on-time. So I am annoyed when people try to get out of paying debt.

You should have taken a money management course. You’re obviously living beyond your means. So cut back on the extra and work on the basic.

If you have kids or married you should have waited til you were fiscally stable to do those things. don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for your stupidity.

Pay what you owe and you wouldn’t have to worry about being garnished. File for Bankruptcy of course the way the laws are wrote now you will still have to pay some of the debt back.

Your family had to make your credit card payments and now it’s student loans? Stop using any kind of credit if you can’t pay. Get a second job.

Have you tried talking to a nonprofit consumer counseling company? They can negotiate with your creditors for lower interest rates and work within your budget. It is done for a small monthly fee. They can be located in the telephone book or by searching the web. I will include some information on them below. Good luck!

What kind of car do you drive, what kind of home do you live in? Where is your money going? Are you living beyond your means? It is important for a person to pay off their debts. You should maybe own a car with no payments and live in a smaller home, in order to feed your family and pay the debts to whom you owe. It would be the respectable thing to do.

How long did you go with out paying your bills? Did you try to work out a payment plan? Usually, they are pretty good about trying to work some sort of plan out with you if you speak to them directly. I would call them and face the music. Try to work out a monthly payment plan, show them how much you are making for a salary and what your monthly bills are, they will help you work out a budget. Good luck!

by law they are only supposed to garnish a percentage of your check, and are supposed to make sure you have enough money to survive. I suggest one of two things, get a lawyer and try to fight it, or get a second job.
