If you cannot answer “Yes” to the following questions:

were you born before January 1, 1984 (1985 for the 0809 FAFSA when that is available January 1, 2008)

are you a graduate or professional student

do you have children you support

do you have legal dependents

are you an orphan or ward of the court

are you active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces

are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces

then you must put down your parental information. You can contact your financial aid office and see about appealing your Dependency status, but it is unlikely that it will be approved with being a self-supporting student as your only argument. Dependency Overrides are normally approved for extenuating circumstances such as a parent being incarcerated or institutionalized. It doesn’t hurt to ask, though.

Once your FAFSA is complete, you won’t need your parent’s to get a Stafford loan – students are able to receive that themselves. More information regarding Stafford loans can be found at www.finaid.org/loans.

The other thing to consider is that if you are 22 now, you may want to wait to go back to school until you are 24 or can answer “Yes” to the above dependency questions.

Talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information/guidance. Good luck!!

I don’t know who told you that you’d have to put your parents down even though you aren’t living with them. I don’t believe that is correct.

I just finished applying for grants and I wasn’t *required* to list my parents.

I was also approved, by the way, for two grants.

Apply. Even if you only get a certificate grant, you may be able to get a scholarship through good grades to continue your education.

Good luck.

Speak to the financial aid office at your school. The folks who work there know which grants and loans have what strings attached. They can steer you to the ones that fit your need.

There are loans that require your parents signature. My son took out one when he was in vo-tech school. They said they needed to “verify” my income. When the loan came back, it was in my name, not his. I was really miffed! Now it’s my debt.

Well from the sounds of it, you are going to go to a good school (40,000) a year??

With that being said, they have finical advisers that will advise you of that, I can’t believe that you have not been helped, they walk you they everything and will let you see what’s best for you.

Good Luck!!

Have you thought about applying for scholarships? Scholarships are free sources of money you can use to pay for school expenses, and you don’t have to pay them back. You can read about them here:

Here are sites that offer scholarships:

I already told you in the first question that you asked…if you don’t have a job then you HAVE to put your parents down as collateral. If you don’t want to put them down – then you have to be working and making money on your own. That is all there is too it…not that easy!!

If your parents don’t claim you on their tax returns and you file your own taxes then you’re considered an independent student.
