FAFSA Question?

I need to reapply for financial aid and I’m worried that I won’t qualify for the federal loans. Can you be denied for making too much money? And how much money is considered too much income?

NO! You cannot be denied a federal financial aid loan because you make too much money. The only way to get denied a federal financial aid loan is if you’ve been convicted of a drug felony, if you’ve maxed out the loans already or if you are on financial aid probation because of poor grades. This website has answers to all of your financial aid questions. Also, contact your financial aid office. They are a great resource for financial aid questions. Good luck

PS – If your income is high, you will not be eligible for GRANTS, but federal unsubsidized loans are not tied to income!

Yes you can be denied Financial aid for making too much money. I’m living proof of it. I had to work full-time+ during school to help support my single mother, and by proxy because I was making “X” amount of dollars the government decided that my EFC was in the 13000 range, disqualifying me for any grants throughout my entire college term. Even if you’re making just enough money to cover living expenses, and there’s no way you’ll have enough to save up on the side for college, the government will only look at the hard statistics, and if you happen to make above a certain amount then you’ll be disqualified for grants.

It’s completely unfair but unfortunately that’s the way the system works. While if you’re not working, and/or you come from parents who are dirt poor and maybe don’t work themselves, then you’ll get rewarded with thousands of dollars in grants.

The best way to find out is to apply anyways. It’s still free to do so and FAFSA will give you an answer quick enough. If you’re EFC is below 4000 then you have a chance at getting grants, anything above and you’ll have to go with loans. Good luck.

EDIT:

Oops sorry. What I meant by financial aid was grants. Items like subsidized and unsubsidized loans are still available to you, even if your income is considered high.

You cannot be denied federal aid if you and/or your parents (if Dependent) make too much money. If your EFC turns out to be high, then you would most likely only be eligible for Unsubsidized loans. It really all depends on what your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and COA (Cost of Attendance) are. Schools use both to determine what type(s) of financial aid you could be eligible for. You can read more about loans at www.finaid.org/loans

You should talk to a financial aid officer for more information. Good luck!
