We call this the magic of compounded interest. There are only two ways to “make money” — either labor or capital.

The labor method requires working and even stealing is work. The capital method simply requires that you invest well (or at least safely) and collect the returns.

So, let’s say you want to “earn” $30,000 this year without working. Assuming an average return on stock investments of 10%, you’d only need to invest $300,000 in the market and just sit back and wait for your check. Of course, letting that $30,000 compound will earn you even more. You could look at other sorts of investing as well, real estate returns well but usually requires work. Gold is hot right now but requires a holding period.

That’s it, the only two ways to make money.

What you might want to do is consider whether the statement “I can’t work” is actually true. Unless you are dead or bed ridden then you can indeed work. Since you’re asking questions here, you aren’t 100% bed ridden….

If you don’t have much money, put your money in the bank and you’ll earn interest.
