That depends. But yes there are some scholarships that will do this. It depends on the amount of your scholarship. First it will go to pay your tuition and school fees. After that if there is money left over they will send you a refund check and the refund check could amount to $500 a week. Very rarely do people receive these scholarships at community colleges though.

I have a friend that got a scholarship to North Harris Community College which is in Houston, Texas and he gets $700 a month for personal use. I don’t know the exact rules and everything of his scholarship, but I do know he gets personal money so it could be possible.

No, that is not true. Scholarships usually give you enough to pay for tuition and books. Some will help pay for room and board but not likely.

Scholarships aren’t concerned with social lives, they are concerned with academia and making the school look good. How? Well scholarships will be taken away from you if you do not maintain a certain (usually high) average. High averages and test scores make a school look very good. Scholarships are kind of like a school’s way of saying, “If you come here and make us look good. We will pay your way.”

Student Assistance programs, like OSAP (Ontario Student Assistant Program) gives students money based on their personal finances and, if they live at home, their parent’s income. They do not care how you spend it. You just have to be enrolled in a school and pay them back within 6 months of graduation before they hit you with high interest rates.

Depends on the college and the scholarship, but yes.

The extra money is called a stipend.

These high end scholarships are not directly involved with the school. They have requirements that are usually along the lines of “If you are going to attend *(college)*, and you are a *(native residence, ethnicity, etc.)*, you will get full tuition and stipend amount.

A scholarship can act in any way that it is intended to. I’ve heard of very few, but similar scholarships that follow those similar guidelines. There are some whacky one out there. Be involved and get good grades and you’ll have better luck with scholarships =)

No, never heard of a scholarship that did that for an undergraduate. There are GRANTS that do that, but that is for graduate school, not undergrad work. Some Indian tribes do pay their tribe members a weekly stipend in addition to paying for college costs, but that is not the majority.

Some grants or higher end scholarships give you stipends, but I’ve only really heard of these for graduate level schools. It sounds like your friend is blowing it out of proportion.

Some scholarships will give a stipend, but 500 seems a little high.

well… if you get say, a $1000 grant, AFTER you pay tuition, which for me was $500 something, you buy you’re books from the college bookstore: 200 something, then I got a $300 check of what was left in the mail for “personal” use.

They may have been thinking about a grant which may pay expenses.
