Do you think I’ll get good financial aid?

I plan on transferring (from a big state university) to a liberal arts college sometime within the next year, and my only concern is the tuition… My parents make good money; My Mom is a Nurse Practitioner and my Dad is a Physician Assistant… but I know they aren’t going to be happy with me transferring to a small liberal arts college… So they might not pay for a lot of the tuition (maybe even none). So, do you think I’ll get a lot of financial aid?

I have a 3.714 GPA and I’m in Honors College at my University. Sounds sad, but I know being a minority helps… but then again, my family is considered middle (maybe upper-middle) class… Any answers are appreciated! Thanks!

Maybe. It really depends on the college that you are transferring to. I was never offered aid until I applied to a small liberal arts college in the south, because my parents made alot of money. They covered almost all of my tuition–and I only had a 3.6 gpa, and not very good extracurriculars. If they want you, and if they have a big endowments, they’ll probably meet your need.

You just have to make them want you really bad! And also, go somewhere that has alot of money floating around for financial aid!

That is hard to say. All financial aid is based on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the FAFSA determines how much aid you will receive based on income. If you are a dependent student (which means unmarried, no children, and under 24) you will have to supply your parents financial information on the FAFSA and then that will probably disqualify you for any Federal Pell Grant. However, if you are an independent student (over 24, have children, or are married) you only have to supply your own financial info which I assume is dractically lower which will then entitle you to a better chance of receiving a Pell Grant.

Either way, every single student who fills out a FAFSA is entitled to Federal Stafford Loans which are: Freshmen $7,500, Sophmore $8,500, and Junior/Senior $10,500 every 210 days of enrollment. So there is plenty of Federal aid to be awarded. Any portion of tuition that that does not cover will probably have to be financed through private credit-based loans.

You could be eligible for scholarships with a good GPA and honors but those all come from outside sources and not from the Government so search for and apply for as many as possible.

PPfffff..nope. I will tell you right now. I’m Living up here at UNT, yet going to college at FMU. If you go to a Liberal Arts school, go to UNT – Cheaper, Better, and Easy. They do all the work for you when it comes to financial aid. (my sister is going to UNT, Me, FMU). She gets 200$ back after federal Aid, I have to pay 1,113 dollars after Financial Aid.

It sounds like our parents make the same amount of money. (My mom is a Nurse Practitioner, and my father is a Social Worker/ MHR Practitioner)….take it from me…UNT. That way, you will have 200$ for a book or half a month rent.

I use this loan company 2/3 days confirmation, and 5-10 days before you get the check. Look for a Primer loan…great interests rates.

(psssst- One thing about UNT – illegal haven up here. Your not going to find a job. This is a student loan town, everyone is living off of loans, so rent is 460 a month, pizzas are 5 dollars for a large 3 topping, and clothes are 8 $ for pants, and 4 for shirts at the mall.) Its cheap here! Plus, everyone is friendly…and you get free sodas Friday, Saturdays and Sundays at the campus. LOL!

Your parents income seems pretty high and since its both ur mom n dad filling income tax together than u really wont get much money

i think your best bet is to stay at your state university where

the tuition is cheaper

or try

to get a job and pay for ur own tuition

you can apply for scholarships

I think that it will come down to what the school itself will offer. govt based financial aid: you wont get much at all, you will never get enough to cover tuition at a private school. however, there are plenty of private schools that reward high achieving minorities like yourself. hopefully, your school will come up with a big chunk of it in grant or scholarship

Those two professionals in your life can more than meet your financial needs. Middle-Upper class is the real deal. 95% are under.

Your parents make good money so you probably wont get that much. Your grades are good but not outstanding, so I don’t really think you’ll get a whole lot.

you should try to apply for a good number of scholarships if you’re worried about financial aid.

why don’t you try to claim yourself as an independant?
