An employee at my job needs help getting financial aid, he is under 23 years old and I am told he would be req

quired to provide his parent’s financial information. However his parent’s do not speak to him so he is unable to get this information.

What can we do to help him get around this rule?

All students in the US who apply for federal fin aid are required to provide parents information unless they meet one or more of these.

24 years old and above

married

have kids they support

have dependents other than kids they support

a ward of the court

are a veteran

are an orphan

have a bachelors degree

In EXTREME cases this can be overridden, but it has to be pretty extreme and documented, like physical or sexual abuse. Maybe if both parents were incarcerated…. The fact that he doesn’t talk to them probably won’t work, nor will trying to prove he doesn’t rely on them for financial support.

Good Luck.

Is he going to be completing a masters program, if so he does not need his parents information. If he is married, he does not need his parent’s information. Does he have dependents that he commits half his income too, if so he does not need his parents information. Are both of his parents deceased, if so he does not need their information. Has he or is he in the armed forces, if so he does not need their information.

Unfortunately, there is no way to help his get around this rule. He could call his parents and tell him the situation. If that is not possible, then I would wait until he is 24 to try again.

If he is a legal adult he should not need his parents’ financial information to obtain financial aide. He may have little or no credit and that is why the financial institution is asking for his parents’ info. He could most likely have any co-signer that was willing to fill out paperwork with/for him.
