Affording College in Texas?

I currently am a junior who is not eligible for loans due to dropping out last semester (Family had medical issues, and I had to pick up more shifts at work in order to afford my own living).

I currently am a math major en route to becoming a teacher. I can’t get loans until fall 2008, and I’m trying to find alternate methods of keeping the ship afloat.

Any fellow Texans here with information about incentive programs for people to become teachers in shortage areas, etc.?

Have you tried contacting the Texas State Board of Education to see if anyone there can give you some ideas? I have not checked their website, but that might be a place to start. Also, be prepared to wend your way through a maze of people before you find someone who can help you. Have a brief explanation of your situation ready, along with your request for things such as “on the job training” in the classroom or alternate loans. I paid for my Master’s by agreeing to teach for one year in my state. Perhaps Texas has a similar program. Good luck.
