Teacher Pay Cliques – How to Get a Pay Raise When Your Students Are Poor
It seems that everywhere you turn these days there are people trying to get a better teacher pay. Teachers are one of the best valued employees, but unfortunately there are pay raises being cut and layoffs happening more frequently. I am not sure that anyone can feel good about this, but the reality is that it is a tough job and most times the teacher is underpaid. But there is some good news here: You can make the teacher pay you deserve.
Local School Board
The first place I recommend looking for information on teachers’ pay is the office of your local school board. These people have the final say on all teacher contracts and what goes on in the classrooms. If you get lucky, then you might be able to speak with someone who can set you up with some concessions. Sometimes teachers’ unions fight for better benefits, and they can certainly negotiate a better deal. If this is what you want, go ahead and get with the teachers’ unions and see what kind of concessions they can give you.
- If you are going to try to negotiate better conditions yourself, then you might as well play the part.
- There are many teacher “machinery” unions out there that will give you special deals.
- But, you have to know the right people and you have to know how to ask the right questions.
For example, do you want the school district to cover all costs from start to finish? Or do you just want to be paid a lump sum amount and covered for a portion of the year?
Most of the time, the union will offer you something halfway to your negotiating position. This is better than nothing, but some people get so caught up in the thrill of the hunt that they sometimes forget to weigh the benefits against the risks. Sometimes, you can get a small raise, but you will be working fewer hours. Sometimes, you can get a big raise and a longer commitment, but your workload will increase dramatically.
So, how do you get a handle on this and still get good teacher pay?
It used to be that you could go around to the schools and look for the superintendents and principals that were willing to make concessions. Now, though, everyone is busy with their own cliques and you may have to work around the teachers that really want your job. You can’t count on them to give you what you really need.
Your best bet is to become an insider.
Find out what the deal is at the schools closest to you. Usually, these are the schools that you probably hear about in the gossip columns and about in the news. Become a trusted advisor to the principals. Know how much you are worth and what you are trying to get, and you just might be able to get some concessions from the cliques.
Another thing to consider is the quality of your teaching. If your classes are taught well, your student test scores will rise. This will bring you more money and promotions down the line. If you are really good, though, you might find it hard to get any raise or promotion at all. Just be careful.
Improve Your Performance
If you want to have a good teacher pay and job, it is time to take matters into your own hands. Find out what is going on at the schools near you and find out how you can improve your performance. If you are able to do that, you may be able to make some headway in breaking through the barriers set up by the cliques. This means making yourself useful to the schools and getting the raises and promotions that you deserve. So, if you are struggling, it may be time to take matters into your own hands.
