Census Data
The data for children under the age of 5years has shown a decrease of 15.54%, during the year 2000 as compared to 1990 figures. While the white population, within the referred community has reduces significantly by 46.25%, during these ten years, the black Afro-American population has increased by 17.09%. However, the significant increase can be seen in the American Indian population as same has shown an upward trend by 192.45%, followed by the increasing trend in Asian/Pacific islander population growing by 122.81% during this period. However, the other races have shown a decline of 84.5%, during the same period.
64/67
Census Data
The activity for housing tenure occupancy has registered an overall growth of 3.72%, in terms of occupied housing units. In this direction, the owner occupied houses have increased by 6.85%, while the renter-occupied units have shown a slight positive change of 1.04%.
As can be seen in the comparison of two data, the female householders have shown an increase of 13.80%, followed by non-family households showing increase of 10.16%. However, the population of householders, living alone has gone up by 10.13%, while it has registered a decrease of 17.35% for householders of 65years and above.
While there has not been any significant change in the population that speaks a language other than English at home, a significant increase can be seen in the population, for Asian language speakers, which has shown increase of 247.17%, during the intervening ten years.
The median household income for the community has shown increase of 11.30%, during this period.
Conclusion
To conclude the following observations can be summarized, while comparing the two census data as given above.
There is a significant decrease of 15.54% in the figures for population of children below 5 years. This can have a serious effect on the population growth for the community, if the decreasing trend persists. However, the overall effect of the change in birth rate need to be related to the national average for population growth, to find if there has been any significant change in the particular community, in this regard.
However, the decrease of 46.15% for white population, during this period,. Specifies that the
65/67
Census Data
above trend is seen mostly in the white population of the community and if it does not stabilize, the other races can further increase, reducing white race to a margin only.
The population for American Indian has increased by 192.45%, while Asian population has increased by 122.81%, which means that more immigration has taken place during this period into the community from Asian and pacific countries. The results can have deterrent effect on the overall community welfare, as more harmonious interaction shall be needed among the different races to live amicably within the community. However, the figure and change should be seen with reference to the overall increase in other regions of the country, to determine the affect of this change on the community.
The change in owner and renter occupied housing units suggest that more people prefer to have their own houses, due to easy availability of mortgage and home lease options, that might have been responsible for such owner ship being affordable to most of the community members. The members of the community should feel more secure and economically better-off, due to this change..
The female householders have shown an increase of around 14% during this period, which means that the trend for single or divorced mothers is rising. However, it does affect on the overall health of the community, as living in a composite home is certainly better than a female only household.
Due to the population increase in the people belonging to Asian origin and Pacific islanders, the Asian language speakers have shown a huge increase of around 247%, during this period. This again could be the direct result of Asian immigrants’ influx into the community. However, its effects, with regard to social and economic behaviroal pattern of the community members need to be closely analyzed further.
66/67
Census Data
As the economy has grown during this period, it has reflected in the median household income, which registered a rise of around 11%, during this period. The other reason for this changing pattern could be that both male and female partners of a family are now earning to substantiate the overall income of the family. In addition, the overall increase in wages for the maximum people living in the community must also have contributed to this change.
