Plagiarism is considered a grave *academic* offense because it strikes at the heart of what education is all about. By claiming for yourself research or scholarship done by others, you are seeking to obtain a diploma or degree obtained under false premises.

Having said this, of course, there are degrees of plagiarism. Normally I will give a paper a grade of “0” if more than 20% of the text of the paper is identiocal to some other published source without attwempt at citation. If a major assignment such as a research paper were found to be plagiarized, it would probably lead to a failure for the course. However, there are some schools which will expel a senior for plagiarizing a majhor assignment.

If plagiarism is permitted, why should teacher bother to read students’ work at all? And since the temptation to copy is so great, the anctions to discourage it must be severe as well.

because it is work to create something good enough for someone to steal. It is emotionally like giving birth. If someone stole your child, it would be a grave offense, wouldn’t it? (At least before they become teenagers) (joke)

Someone would take it so if it was their child that was plagiarized. They did the work. they made the effort. they finished the work

You’re on your way to being a good writer, my friend ’cause you can SPELL plagiarism.

Expanding on another’s ideas is fine, even more than fine. To take someone else’s ideas and say they are your own, is worthy of death…thus, the “grave” offense.

Well your lying to everyone and at the same time your stealing someone elses work. Also if your still in school you’re there to learn so the real question you should ak yourself is why would you plagarise in the first place? You don’t learn anything by stealing someone elses ideas. At my school you can be suspended/expelled.

Because it misleads people who accept your credentials in good faith. Ultimately it is an offence to you; because people will soon stop looking at your record, look at you, and find nobody home.
