Bidwill With No E!

Why is my last name, Bidwill, almost always misspelled as Bidwell?

My last name is spelled incorrectly at least 80% of the time. Here are a few examples of important documents where my name was originally misspelled until I had it corrected:

My Dad’s tombstone

My state ID

My home deed

Records at 2 of my 3 career-oriented jobs

My car insurance…where a month later I got another letter saying they noticed my name was entered incorrectly and ‘corrected’ it back to the wrong name!

Can anyone explain why my last name, Bidwill, is so consistently misspelled as Bidwell?

Bidwell is a more common spelling than Bidwill. If someone’s not paying a lot of attention, it’s an easy mistake to make. If possible, when filling out forms make a note that the spelling is ‘Bidwill’ not ‘Bidwell’. That should cut down some of the mistakes. Good luck.

You are not alone…. people have been mispelling my first name Erin wrong my whole life…I have had it spelled….. Erwin, Aron, Arin, Aaron, Karen, Sharon….. when I tell someone my name I always have to repeat it for then…then spell it….. now I am having problems with my married last name as well….. Fox, Frost, Fost……etc…… I do get annoyed by it sometimes…..especially when telemarketers call my house for Erwin Frost ^_^

because in the engilsh language it looks better spelled wrong… also if you break it down bid+will makes less sense than bid+well

More surnames end in “well” than in “will,” so people are going with what they know.

Please don’t gnash your teeth; it wears them down.
