Why does Spider-Man has a dash but Superman doesn’t?

Is it because a spider is living thing and super is not?

Actually, it’s not a dash. It’s just a piece of web string that got stuck to the paper the first time Spider-Man signed an autograph. Then his name got published in the papers like that and he had to keep the dash ever since. Plus, if you wrote Spider-Man without the dash, it just looks like some regular person’s last name. See if you can pick out the superhero from this list below:

Fleckman

Mellman

Peterman

Herman

Shulman

Spellman

Forkman

Spiderman

Goldman

Silverman

Tinman

Aquaman

I think that Spider-man is hyphenated because that superhero’s abilities or powers are those of a spider’s, enhanced or embedded in a man … spider-man. However, Superman’s abilities or powers were not gained through some “interaction” with another “thing”, living or not. Perhaps another example might be, the Swamp-thing. However, sometimes that one is hyphenated, and sometimes it is not.

Just my 2 cents worth. 🙂

Maybe because Spiderman can spray a web, pull on it, and yank himself forward. Superman can’t do that.
