Are your referring American English? Standard American English is not slang, but an incredibly rich language with strict grammar rules and vocabulary, much of which is common to British English. Don’t take colloquial, regional slang usage as Amercian English. There’s a world of difference. Pick up a copy of the New York Times and tell me that is “slang”!

Are you asking why you have to learn correct English when English people don’t speak it? If so, the easy answer is that that is the way schools work, and if you want to pass you will use correct English too.

A more serious answer is that if you learn to speak properly you stand a far, far better chance of getting a good job. Because professional people DO speak good English.

‘Ee’s bleedin’ jokin’ in’t ‘ee?

I wouldn’t exactly say most Londoners speak “proper” English.
