I don’t think it’s laziness or illiteracy…

Most people don’t know.

I didn’t until… like… a couple of years ago…

You rarely see ‘a lot’ used in books that you might read in school. Most authors or textbooks would say ‘many’ or ‘a great number of’ or something like that.

So it’s probably just ignorance — they don’t know.

I think that people don’t spell well because they don’t read much. You have to SEE words before you know how to spell them, most of the time; simply hearing them won’t do (certainly not for English!). As people have turned more and more to TV, computers, etc., for entertainment, they’ve quit reading, and that means no visual association for many words.

Laziness?

Or maybe those people got used to the “Text Language” –> Spellings you use when you text or use your mobiles.

I think subconsciously they are using “a lot” the same way they treat “lots” (that is, as one word), as in “lots of apples” / “alot of apples”. It makes a weird kind of sense if you think about it.
