WHY DO PEOPLE TYPE IN ALL CAPs?

Why do people when asking questions, type “LIKE THIS” and why does it seem that those people are associated with the people who spell “lik ths n stff n thy dnt kar wht they spll lik” .. If there’s anyone out there who does, can you explain?

I can understand why people don’t use spell-check — it hardly EVER works. At least, on my computer.

I think many people just don’t realize that “CAPS LOCK” is on, because they are watching the keyboard, not the screen. By the time they realize it, they have typed so much that they don’t want to start all over.

Probably a few people just like to use it to make a statement, and don’t care about the fact that it seems like shouting.

I think a lot of people have never been told that all caps typing is the online equivalent of shouting at someone – although I have come across a few people who know and don’t care. Spell check, well, I’m not even going to try to guess on that one. I wish we had grammar check here too, lol.

Some do it have the letters at the same height, as in street signs. Others do it to emphasize words (when only those are in all caps). A good example is the word “ever” in your question. Writing the entire question in all caps can emphasize it among other questions, and get it more answers. In Spanish it is deemed acceptable to omit accents (Rubén-RUBEN) on words—I’m not sure about umlauts on “U”‘s (güera)—if they are in all caps. I, myself, write names with accents in all caps when I’m chatting, in order to type faster.

But the best reason I could give would be emphasis among other questions.

I think it’s ok to to use all caps for emphasis. I don’t know how some people got the idea that using caps constitutes “screaming.” Caps have always been used for emphasis. It is acceptable and appropriate.

Now, this PIG “shorthand” is another matter. It’s being rude to the reader and sends this message: “I don’t care.”

Typing is all caps is generally viewed as shouting. Those that do this are usually rude and obnoxious and should be eliminated along with those that aren’t able to spell simple words.

Usually if my wife is using the computer before me she uses caps a lot and leaves them on, I dont notice and type a lot, I have to look at the keys to type, I then notice but am too lazy to retype it all so there you have it caps explained.

All caps indicates yelling or the person wants to make a strong point. It is also considered rather rude.

‘All caps’ typing eliminates the possibility of utilizing that method for emphasis WHEN NEEDED.

It is nearly as bad as blatant redundancies like ‘each and every’, ‘and etc.’ (yeah, I’ve seen this!) or contradictions-in-terms such as ‘not hardly’ and the deadly, nonsensical ‘could care less’ for ‘don’t give a damn’.

I don’t know, but I don’t even read the ones in all caps. It messes with my eyes too much. So if they’re trying to catch people’s attention with it they’re wasting their time with me. It’s like shouting, but in print. INDEED, IT IS VERY ANNOYING WHEN PEOPLE TYPE IN ALL CAPS.

They want attention. If Yahoo allowed people to write in bold lettering and increase the size of the fonts, then they would likely use those all of the time as well as a means to stand out.
