Why do people say count to ten?

If ever i forget something and have to go back and get it, my nan always says “count to ten”, where does this come from and what does it mean?

It is a way to calm you down enough to think rationally

Your Nan has dementia, she’s using the phrase inappropriately. It’s used when you are gonna “fly off the handle” (you can ask about this phrase later) at someone and you count to ten so that you calm down before acting or reacting.

It is like those commercials they used to have on TV that told people to take a break from what you are doing to rethink and pull yourself together before doing anything more so that you make a smart decision. They say that by counting to ten you aren’t as frustrated or angry and that you calm down and become more rational.

Most people learn to count to ten as a child and its a number you’ll never forget and its the same number of thumbs and fingers we have. I guess!

It is a techinique used to slow down and just calm down a little bit.

Sort of a forced cooling down or thinking period.
