WHY..do many Yahoo-ites seem to believe intelligence is based on good spelling and grammar?

Of course this is used when they dis agree with the questioner or ansewer how ever, they completly overlook the message because the medium (speling or syntax) dose’nt rise to their level of perfection. To me, this is the epitome of anality. Like the English teacher admonishing Johnny’s paper cause he s made afew spelling errors, completly disregarding what he had to say. How boring that teachers life must be. SPELLING is not important…IDEAS are important. After all…it’s not us that is spelling good on this forum. It’s the spelling check. Now if the damn spelling check program can figure out what word it is, can’t these analy fixated spelling aces do as well.

I say this cause on one of my questions I mispelled one word. I was immediatly accused of sub normal intelligence. Not that I was’nt being a little foolhardy. But attack me on principle’s, not mis-spelled words. Well..If you really want to know the circumstances.look at the question I asked Wrestling fans

Real answer:

These people point out these mistakes (generally prissy’s) to accomplish 2 things:

– appear superior and “right”

– means of changing subject due to their weak arguments, frustration, and own personal obsessions or “need” to always “correct” others.

Infact, the worst, most intellectually “challenged” debates I’ve come into contact with are often from these Spelling Nazi types, and yes, that includes teachers.

Correct spelling, along with correct grammar and diction are important features in education, if you cannot master these important issues then all the ‘good ideas’ under the sun are not going to help you. It has little to do with intelligence, merely ability. It has been my experience that people, who, insist, such as yourself, that spelling is unimportant, are, by and large, lacking somewhat in education. As a spell checker is provided on this site I can only assume it is laziness on the part of the author not to employ it. Even so, I still have to correct the spell checker as it only contains American spellings, which, as you may have gathered, is not my forte. You will, of course, give this answer, the thumbs down, such is life.

What have we here, in the next answer, a rich ( he says) failure, his frustration is so that anyone who has a spark of intelligence is a pseudo Nazi, he must have had a very hard time from his tutors. As for having money as a compensation I know many people with lots of money and still as thick as they come. By the way you spelt millionaire wrongly, just a small point but evident never the less.

You have at least 15 spelling errors in this question, not to mention grammar problems.

If someone has written something riddled with errors, it is annoying to read and, more importantly, reflects poorly on the writer’s conscientiousness.

Mistakes are a little more forgivable and ignorable if they are obviously typing errors, words that are commonly misspelled, or words that, when misspelled, become another “correct” word (like leaving out the w in two). However, in this day and age of SPELL CHECKing, most of these errors are easily found by the writer!

It’s because most educated people had it drilled into their head that this stuff is important by English teachers with nothing better to do except for fill people’s heads with useless rules about their native language.

Since we the educated portion of Y!A have had this indoctrination for so long, many of us have come to believe the hype that intelligence is based a points system in which proper spelling counts. Therefore, if your post has one misspelled word (even if it’s obviously a typo), your usage must be corrected and you’ve already received a 20% demerit, so at best you’d get a C+ and that’s at best average, so you must not have anything fascinating to say.

Or something like that. I don’t know.

Because, in my experience, most people who lack the ability to say something with proper grammar and spelling lack the capacity to have anything worth saying. There are rare exceptions, but they are just that – RARE. Intelligence isn’t based on good spelling and grammar, only demonstrated by it.

Because when you spell wrongly, you are associated with people who are not that clever. Unless you are a dyslexic in which case people will have second thoughts about you.

Good spelling and grammar are excellent yardsticks with which to assess a person’s intelligence.

Why is it that poor spellers always think that their way is the right way to go?

We’re not wrong. But whomever accused you of being of lower intelligence, was rude.

Spelling words correctly and being grammatically correct, have an effect on the reader as to how serious they take the content of the question.

If I ever offend, please, feel free to let me know….I’ll apologize.

how are you going to communicate your ideas if your spelling and grammar are so bad no one can understand what you are saying?
