Don’t ever stick to staid grammar rules. Try saying both the sentences and you’ll realize that the first one sounds more right. It indeed is. Why would anyone say ‘he wanted to MAKE his business GO smoothly’ when the right thing to say would be ‘he wanted to run his business smoothly’?
