They’re all short vowels

You need to put the letter ‘e’ on the end of some of the them to make the vowels long.

eg.

hug – short

huge – the u becomes long

fin – short

fine – the i becomes long.

English is a strange language…

Short vowels have an UH, Ah, Ith, sound, like cat, rug, itch. Long vowels say themselves like in bite, cave, go. In phonics there are also the oooo sounds and Housetop vowels. At least that is what it was called in yester-year.

They are all short. A long vowel sounds like you are saying it’s name. For examples, ‘rule’ has a long ‘u’ and ‘fine’ has a long ‘i’. Practice saying the words out loud and you will see what I mean.

Trick question, eh? None of them are long because none have an “e” at the end. They are all short. Nice try though…
