Which is the first day of the week? See extra details for more on this question.?

I was always told that Sunday was the first day of the week, though when people say the names of the days of the week, Monday is always first.

I did not pay much notice to this, until a German-speaking friend of mine asked me to explain the logic of this, and I was stumped. Can you help us with this? Thanks.

Well according to the song sung to children to teach them the days of the week by Barney to the tune of (“Found a Peanut”), SUNDAY is the first day of the week:

Sunday, Monday

Tuesday, Wednesday

Thursday, Friday

Saturday

Sunday is the first day of the week. The division of time into seven-day weeks is traditional, and having weekly days of rest is specifically a gift of the Jews.

The seven-day week as we understand it was, if not originated, at least definitively justified by the Jews. Genesis 2:3 points out that the seventh day was the day on which God rested from creation, and the Law of Moses mandates that the seventh day is to be a day of rest for all – including slaves and even animals (Deuteronomy 5:13-14). In Jewish tradition, Saturday is the Sabbath, and certain Christian bodies keep this strict seventh-day sabbatarianism (notably the Seventh-Day Adventists).

But (as Christians believe) Christ was raised on the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1-2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1), after the Sabbath was over. Because of this, Christians traditionally have their primary worship events on Sunday, and the Mosaic sabbatarian regulations were gradually transferred to Sunday among the vast majority of Christians.

Nowadays, both Saturday and Sunday are seen as days of rest, and some calendars show Monday as the first day of the week since it’s the first day of the “working week” (Monday-Friday only). You may be familiar with “seven to ten working days” which essentially means two weeks.

Sunday is the first day of the week from Hebrew origins. Saturday is the sabbath or 7th day. It has to do with astrology (order in our solar system) and Christianity (ecclesiastical week).

This is true in US and most English-speaking countries. In Europe, South America, Russia, the Slavic countries and parts of Asia Monday is Day 1.

Good Question!!!

For a person who is busy in his daily cores Monday is the first working day!!

Therefore Saturdays and Sundays are weekend days.

School going children observe their routine only to enjoy the Sundays and Hence they wait for the weekdays to go. It means Sundays are the last days of the week to enjoy.

There is a saying and a song in a Hindi Movie as follows:– MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY,

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY,,

CHAY DIN TAK PAAPAD BELEY

TO AATA HAI SUNDAY, HOLIDAY JOLLY DAY

So it is crystal clear people don’t wait for the first day but the last day to come, and as such Monday is the First day.
