where does the term soft drink comes from?

I think during prohibition when alcohol (hard liquor) was outlawed, instead of drinking “hard” drinks, they drank “soft” drinks…

It’s the opposite to hard liquor.

Here in Australia at least, it only refers to fizzy drinks and not fruit juice, cordial or milk. I don’t know if that’s the case elsewhere though.

I believe the first “soft drinks” are late 1800’s.

They are opposed to hard drinks ie: liquor.
