A psychiatrist has an M.D. after his or her name. They have a medical degree with a specialty in treating mental illnesses. A psychologist has no medical degree, and cannot prescribe medications for mental illnesses. They rely on psychological theories and psychological tests to determine what’s “wrong” with an individual and what’s the best way to counsel them. Interesting, that most psychologists use the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders in order to designate or diagnose the alleged problem their new client has. I hope this has been somewhat helpful. God Bless you.

The sanction to prescribe or not has been covered by many answers & they are right in this differentation.Medicine as we all know consits of so many distinct specialities or disciplines ,after the basic medical qualification doctors usually go on to a post graduate specialisation in a discipline of their choice, one such branch is ,psychiatry. The qualified psychiatrist is therefor a medical man with a specialistaion in psychiatry That is the basic reason why he can & does diagnose & treat mental illnesses apart frpm guidance & counselling in minor mental upheavals. The psychologist is trained in aspects of mental health, counselling & conducating test according to many prescribed scales,is not a medical person, hence is not capable of treating such conditions.

A Psychiatrist is a Medical Doctor with a Residency in Psychiatry. They therefore are qualified to asses clinical diagnosis and prescribe Psychotropic medications,

A Psychologist is trained to do the above but is not a medial Doctor does not have Residency and cannot prescribe Medicine. They also are not trained in the Medical Model of clinical treatment but the Therapeutic model and therefore are more likely to be licensed and qualified to perform therapy with consumers.

EDIT: I would like to be edified as to any fundamental difference between what I have said and what Randy D has said???

In my psychology class my teacher told me this. Psychologist go for 12 years of school the study the mind and they can prescribe drugs they have a PHD. A psychiatrist goes through just as much schooling 12 years and can prescribe drugs but I don’t think they study the mind and do experiments an things like that.

diverse the persons are spot on. the main important distinction is that a psychiatrist can prescribe drugs, collectively as a psychologist can no longer. That being reported psychiatrist are incredibly a lot unique to the scientific sector. Psychologists have a sort of varieties in terms of specialisation. e.g organisational psychologists artwork in agencies to help boost artwork delight and productiveness with the help of employing psychological principals. they do no longer likely handle psychological illnesses. activities psychologists help athletes carry out extra beneficial, employing their understanding of psychology. Psychologists do no longer make certain remedies employing drugs it incredibly is the activity of psychiatrists. Given your goals, it looks like the flow you’re aiming for is counselling psychologist. in this place you would be employing counselling recommendations to help the infants arise with the variety to handle their problems. you could continuously improve to psychiatrist in case you opt to have the skill to prescribe drugs.

You misspelt PSYCHOLOGIST.

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is certified in treating mental illness.[1] As part of their evaluation of the patient, psychiatrists are one of only a few mental health professionals who may prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and electroencephalograms, and may order brain imaging studies such as computed tomography or computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography scanning.

A psychologist is a scientist and/or clinician who studies psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior and cognition. Psychologists are usually categorized under a number of different fields, the most well-recognized being clinical psychologists, who provide mental health care, and research psychologists, who conduct substantive and applied research.
