Who’s sarcastic?

What’s with all the question marks?

I hate it when people use more than one question mark. I mean, one implies a question. What do 40 imply? A really important question? Nope. What’s the point? Can someone explain this phenomenon?

It emphasizes the question. The asker really wants to know.

It has come from an over-emphasis on the subjective. It’s not correct, but people place their feelings above correct grammar. A little, now and then, for artistic license, is fine, but we’ve gove overboard.

Thanks for correcting the “excepted.” Those things drive me crazy, but I have, for the most part, given up. It’s refreshing to see that someone else knows and cares.

I believe multiple question marks are used to make the sentence exclamatory. Such as “Why can’t you ever be on time???” It’s somewhat retorical. It’s the difference in speech between asking, “Son, why can’t you behave?” And the yelling voice that asks, “WHHHHHY can’t you behave?” Instead of adding letters in the sentence, we add punctuation at the end.

It’s the same reason people use all capital letters to emphasize something. “I really HATE the traffic on Fridays.” Is the capitalization necessary? No, but everyone gets the point.

With instant messaging and text messaging becoming so prevalent, our language is bound to change over time. Resistance is pointless.

it implies that the asker is desperate for an anwer or really confused. i am occasionally guilty of using two or three, but i get annoyed when people use too many, so i understand why you’re irked.

It is a phenomenon encouraged by electronic keyboards. When a different stroke was need for each character, you didn’t see this nearly as much.

I think more than one implies either impatience or major confusion.

I don’t know!!!!

I am guessing that is has something to do with trying to add emphasis to a question that might not be very intriguing on its own. I would never do something like that.

Good luck!!!!

Unforutnately, they think they are emphasizing their question. In truth, it’s bad grammar.
