What’s this symbol called?

Ok so.

You have the forward slash (/) and the backslash (\), but what do you call the middle one? |

Does it even have a name?

In some contexts, it is called a “pipe.”

I don’t have a copy of Microsoft Word handy, but it can tell you. Go to Insert, and then Symbol. Scroll through the list of symbols until you find the vertical bar. Hover over it and it will display the name of the symbol. I have looked through the list a few times to find names for such symbols, but don’t recall the name of that one.

It can be called either, but I would call it an exvlamation mark because it is typicallt compared to a question mark. Whatever you do, don’t refer to it as an excited mark because it’s not used only for excitement.

It’s simply called a vertical. Some fonts produce the vertical in two pieces, like two dashes arranged one above the other vertically. In this case it’s called a split vertical. As one solid line, it is used by mathematicians by putting one on either side of a number to indicate absolute value. In that context, it would be referred to as an absolute value indicator (or absolute value brackets).

A quick look at the Accessories>System Tools>Character Map suggests that it’s officially named “Vertical Line”.

I’ve never heard of any other fancy naming for it.

That was a rather suitable naming from them don’t you think? ;p

EDIT:

Oh, a couple of websites also refer to is as “vertical bar” instead of lines.

That would be the letter ‘l’, as in the last letter of your username!
