the plot of the story is the form in which it takes, the actual goings on within the tale where as a theme is the underlying, “message”; a recurring idea or belief the author instills in the story and is trying to be conveyed to the Constant Reader.

Plot is what the story is about, such as “A man moves to New York only to find his long lost love working at the coffee shop around the corner.”
Theme is the general subject or idea, which can often times be described in one word. The best example of this would be similar to what category a movie falls under: horror, comedy, musical. It doesn’t have to be that simplistic; it could be something like “long lost love” or “growing up”.

Plot is more specific than theme. Think of it in terms of, the plot thickens, you wouldn’t say, the theme thickens, whereas you might say that the theme of the plot thickens.
