@ means “at”. For instance, “I am @ the gym” would mean “I am AT the gym”. Most people use it in that form as shorthand. It’s not really proper to use it that way in most correspondence.

It also is used in e-mail addresses… [email protected]. Does that help?

The @ is a symbol which is the equivalent of the word at. It goes simply by the name of the at sign or sometimes the ape tail.

There are a few theories of how it originated. Some say it was the creation of monk scribes in the Middle Ages, abbreviating the word “ad” which is Latin for at. Others say that it developed as a cursive form of the French word “à” which means at, as well. It was also used by the Spanish to denote a unit of weight/volume — it became an abbreviation for “arroba,” a Spanish word meaning amphora, which is a vessel in which wine was held. Now it holds the meaning of “at the rate of” or “at.”
