No kidding. In the late 1830s, it was the fad in Boston and New York to deliberately misspell things and abbreviate them. OK – standing for “oll korrect” – was the only of these terms to get widespread lasting approval, mostly because of the 1840s US presidential election. There, Martin VanBuren’s campaign coopted the “O.K.” moniker, linking it to VanBuren’s nickname of “Old Kinderhook (city in Virginia; his hometown)”, and the supposition that electing him would help make things… o.k.
