When the Declaration Of Independence was signed, the event was celebrated by the ringing of the Liberty Bell on the fourth of July, or at least that is the popular American Myth.

There is some doubt that the actual Liberty Bell would have been rung because

1) The tower it was housed in was unstable

2) The actual signing was on the 8th of July

Nonetheless– it is a powerful image that sits in the American psyche. The bell tolling over the land- reaching across the mountains and fields to proclaim that we are a free country.

It is a story that has been immortalized many times…

by a story writer named George Lippard in 1847. “And the child raised itself on tip-toe and pressed its tiny hands against the bell, and read, in lisping tones, these memorable words:

“Proclaim Liberty to all the Land and all the inhabitants thereof.” [sic]”

In a sonnet by HRH Moore…

“Ring loud that hallowed Bell!

Ring it long, ring it long;

Through the wide world let it tell

That Freedom’s strong:”

By a civil rights activist named Martin Luther King Jr.

“Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring. And when this happens, when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old ***** spiritual, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!””

By– George W. Bush, December 12, 2005.

” Not far from here where we gather today is a symbol of freedom familiar to all Americans — the Liberty Bell. When the Declaration of Independence was first read in public, the Liberty Bell was sounded in celebration, and a witness said: “It rang as if it meant something.””

And even by a country music singer

“Yes there’s a lady that stands in a harbor for what we believe. And there’s a bell that still echoes the price that it cost to be free.”

– Aaron Tippen, “Where The Stars And Stripes And Eagles Fly”

Freedom to me means that our government stays out of my personal business. The government’s job is suppose to be to protect this country and it’s citizens from acts of war. The government Is not suppose to tell me what to eat, whether or not I can smoke, that I must buy medical insurance, etc. People, we are slowly losing our freedoms. God’s creatures are losing their freedoms as a result of greedy humans. Many animals are being killed in Africa for souvenirs not for food. Animals lose all their freedom in testing labs and I Am against all testing on animals – since science is so damn smart let them find another way to see how dangerous their product is.

Let Freedom Ring has various meanings to humans. It depends where you were born. To a South African, it wouldn’t mean much at all, and even less to a Tanzanian. Other creatures don’t understand the spoken word, so you couldn’t even translate it.

He did not say “let freedom ring” like a bell. He said “let freedom reign” like a king. Let freedom have sovereign power and dominion in this great land of ours. Sadly because we did not understand what he said, we have not done what he has said.
