they’re both exactly the same.
for some verbs, by putting an ‘a- ‘ in front, we get to eliminate the ‘-ing’
like asleep and sleeping.

The difference is that the first one -when i was asleep- is in past tense, and the second one -when i was sleeping- is in past continuous tense..this will affect how you write your sentences..
it is like the difference between “tomorrow i am going to walk” and “tomorrow i will walk” both are future tense, one is in action/continuous, one isn’t..does that make sense? if the second part is confusing just ignore it..
MAIN POINT: if you are doing it for english class, then it matters, if not, then just forget it, it isn’t a big difference..really really minor..
