What is meant by “as of” in this context? Does it mean “from” or “until”?

———————–

Payment for invoice has not been received *as of* September, 2007. Your immediate attention to this matter would be appreciated.

Brilliant, this means neither “from” nor “until.” It means that on (or during, since it’s a whole month) September, 2007, the company or individual had not yet received payment. Usually the phase “as of” gives a specific date, like “as of September 17, 2007.”

Businesses use this language to allow for the possibility that your payment arrived before their letter or bill reached you. They’re telling you what their records indicate on the day they sent you the letter or bill.

If your payment should have been there well before the date given, contact the bank to see if your check has cleared.

It means as of. That’s it. No froms or untils… the payment is overdue… payment was due as of September 2007, and hasn’t been received, because Sept. 1 is done and gone… so late fees may be applied if one doesn’t pay said invoice, as they write, immediately, if not already done.

EDIT: Good job, diesel, I like yours. Mine are always so late and a dollar short… I’ll get an invoice any day now!

Basically what their saying is that payment has not been recieved throught September. So quite simply it means that when they sent the invoice they had not recieved payment but by the time you get the invoice you may have sent the payment or payed for it or whatever

It means that during September 2007, when this notice was sent out, the payment was not received. This lets you know that if you sent it in after this time then you can ignore the notice.

It means neither “from” or “until”.

The phrase is used to provide a “status report” relating to a current or future event.

In your example, “as of” means:

“The current situation, in the month of September, is that payment for the invoice has not been received.”

I think it means that when they sent that letter, they had not yet received the payment. They say “as of September” so that if you have recently sent out the payment, you will know to disregard the letter.

“Since”.

They received something in August. But they have not received payment since then.

This is a borderline gray-area phrase. Similar to those phrases that have a meaning that’s different from the actual words in the phrase.
