I know a person who has some of the traits you described about yourself. She seems very standoffish, and then when she does decide to say something it has a negative vibe behind it. Even when she says something good, when I look in her eyes it doesn’t seem like she is really believing what she is saying, and she just has a bad attitude in general. Whether she is pessimistic or not, I don’t know, but that’s the feeling I get from her. Anyway, to answer your question, a realistic person is not gullible or naive. They do not go after anything just because it sounds good. They see things as they are, and deal with them as such. I am a realistic person because I love logic and common sense and it keeps me from getting involved in badness. For example, it is very very popular for people to get involved in money schemes based on e-mails they receive saying that they won a million dollars, but in order to receive it they need to send this company $500 to pay for fees and international taxes to have the million dollars sent to them. Common sense should tell the victims that if you win money, you don’t have a pay for it. Being realistic also allows me to appreciate people who are genuine and not attribute wrong motives to them. On the other hand, a pessimist constantly looks for badness in everything. It goes beyond seeing things as they are to feeling that everything and everyone is evil without evidence of such. For example, if a pessimist gets a promotion at work, he may not accept it feeling that he slaves enough for his job and they aren’t going to get more work out of him. If a pessimist has the money to go on a vacation, she may not do it feeling that all of the possible vacations she can go on are too expensive. If a pessimist meets a really nice person, he may not befriend him feeling that the person’s kindness is just an act and their true nature will shine through eventually. A pessimist cannot even enjoy a beautiful scene of paradise because he is thinking of how dangerous it must be to climb the mountain in the background, how many bees must be in the flowers, how he wishes the temperature was a little cooler, and how the food tastes better where he is from. I’m not saying some of these things can’t ever be true depending on the circumstance, but a pessimist feels these ways whether the circumstance really exists or not. Pessimists can even come up with badness about reaching their own goals or filling their own desires. Yes, you are supposed to see the positive things in life without ignoring the bad things as you are confronted with them, but if you are actively choosing to see the bad things in life in everything when there is no need to, then you are a pessimist. 1 Timothy 1:11 says that God is a happy God. Therefore, he must also want us to be happy since we were created in his image. (Genesis 1:26) A person cannot be happy if he is too busy unnecessarily seeing the bad in things and questioning others’ motives.
