You have “the” twice, but the first time I read it my brain disregarded one “the”.

No No my two esteemed colleagues above me are in error. The meaning of this adage is as follows

The thing that you own is more useful or valuable to you than two of those things not available to you.

Although its just one bird, its my bird and I wouldn’t trade it for two of this type of bird flying by.

Its like saying appreciate what you’ve got and don’t go wishing you had more cause they’re out there yes but you probably won’t be able to catch them.

It’s a old saying that was probably designed to promote small thinking and subordination to authority and I don’t much care for it. Now I could be wrong about this meaning so don’t sue me if I am, but that’s what my impression was.

It means that you are better off with one thing in your possession than many that are out there with a possibility of you getting them…..for instance….when I was still younger than today and at high school, and boys being boys, we liked to flirt….sometime we would decide to go to the other villages for a weekend groove – like going to the night clubs etc…..we wouldn’t like to be there on our own…without girls….so, we would ask our gfs to accompany us…….some of the boys would argue that we should not take our gfs along as we would find new female friends wherever we would be going and our gfs might be jealous…..others would argue that what if we don’t get find them..? Those wishing to have their gfs along would say “a bird in the hand is better than two in a bush”…..there are prospects but they are not guaranteed……..
