When the Jews were wandering in the wilderness and complaining against God, God then sent snakes to poison the people. When they repented, God instructed Moses to fashion a bronze snake on a pole and when someone was bitten, they could look to the emblem of God’s mercy in faith and be healed.

That is found in Numbers chapter 21 if you want to look it up and read it.

You’re talking about the Rod of Aesclepius, an ancient symbol associated with the Greek god of healing. Snakes have not always had negative connotations, as they do in Christianity. Snake oil and snake venom have been used as medicines throughout history. In ancient times, doctors also trained and used live snakes as agents of healing. Certain snakes generate a bioelectric field that can interact with the human bioelectric field, correcting energetic imbalances, clearing blockages, and attracting extra circulation to damaged tissues. Some people continue practicing serpent healing to this day. I was once fortunate to receive such a healing, so I can attest to its powers and benefits, which are not unlike the benefits of acupuncture. The Rod of Aesclepius remains as the symbol of an ancient healing practice which has been largely forgotten.

The six bars of the Star of Life represent six distinct phases of an EMS response –

detection, reporting, response, on scene care, care in transit, and transfer to definitive care……

The snake and staff in the center of the symbol portray the

staff of Aesculapius who, according to Greek mythology, was the son of Apollo and the mortal

maiden Coronis. Apollo was told to instruct his son in the ways of medicine and healing.

Aesculapius became an excellent healer of the sick – too excellent. Zeus, the God of Gods, felt

that Aesculapius’ powers were beyond the powers of mortal men and killed him where he stood

with a bolt of lightning.

Thats called a cadeuces (not sure if I spelled it right), and it’s been around since the ancient Greeks. They used to attribute it to Hermes, the messenger /medicine god. I guess it stuck, to represent physicians and medicine.
