The word ‘Gung ho’ is Chinese and means “working together” which was adopted by the WWII U.S. Marine Corp as their official motto.
A U.S. Marine officer was in China just before World War II and observed Chinese military organization techniques and also the oganization of Chinese gangs; team work in China was called ‘gung ho’.
During WWII a Marine unit in 1943 called ‘Carlson’s Rangers’, after General Evans Carlson, used the term ‘Gung ho’ for ‘esprit de corps and tight team work.
The Marine Raider Battalions were disbanded in 1944 but their motto, ‘Gung Ho’, remained with the Marine Corp to this very day.
Today the concept of ‘Gung Ho’ has been corrupted to mean a fanatical devotion to duty.
