Just a way of saying “from start to finish” based on the idea t hat when people sit down to a formal, multi-course meal, the first dish to be put in front of you is the soup. The meal finally ends with little nibbles, including most likely a few nuts with your liqueur or glass of brandy. Actually though, even this isn’t strictly correct, because formal meals usually don’t start with soup but with a little tangy appetizer, something small, colorful and interesting on the plate, intended to stimulate your tastebuds in preparation for the meal to come.
