You’re playing cards and betting, but you don’t have jack. You trick the other person into thinking that you’ve got a group of cards that beats theirs. They give up and you get paid. You bluffed. (OR) He stays in the game. You show what you’ve got and he gets paid. He called your bluff.
Used as slang. You’re messin with some big bad bruiser type, making him think that you’re Bruce Lee reincarnated. Bruiser gives up and you stay out of the hospital. Your cards wouldn’t beat his, but he didn’t know that… catch my drift? If he calls your bluff, better dial 911.
Gave rise to the verb “bluffing” or “bluff”. Using your mental prowess to overcome defeat without being able to actually provide it.
in blind man’s bluff .. you have someone blind folded and they try to catch people .. the pursue-ees can make sounds and then be silent thus misleading the pursuer .. in cards you can ‘pretend’ to have a hand that doesn’t exist .. as in blind mends bluff ,, pretend that something exists/is were it is, that doesn’t
calling you bluff is to pose a situation which means you must put up or shut up .. i.e. prove yourself to be true .. hence the expression to ‘call ones bluff’ meaning to make you prove your position or power
