It stands for “Save Our Ship”.

Besides S.O.S, there is another emergency call, which could be used if the desperate victim has a two-way radio :

“Mayday, Mayday” could be used.

If you have a CB radio and it’s an emergency, use channel 9.

Absolutely Nothing, it was chosen because the pattern is easy to learn and there was nothing elese similar, for years people have tried to say it meant Save our Ship

Save our Souls, ect, but it means nothing .

I was always taught that it means “save our ship.” It’s a distress call, and probably one of the easiest things to send and receive in Morse code.
