A dot com (.com) is a website for a business on the internet. A dot org (.org) is typically a non-profit organization.

A few years ago, thousands of start-up companies collectively sunk billions of dollars into companies doing business primarily on the web with ‘dot-com’ in their names. Needless to say, the growing bubble finally burst, causing most of these companies to go belly up. So ‘dot-com’ has come to mean, investing too much in an idea that is bound to fail.

A profound “NO!” to the previous poster (Daniel). It means to crash and burn like Daedalus’ wings. A fly by night business venture. Something ill-conceived, faddish, and madly gotten on board with by overly optimistic entrepreneurs only to quickly lose their collective bottoms; a pig in a poke and a bird in the bush.
