It means you’re really very smart, and an under achiever.
Competent is good. Competent means that you are properly capable and efficient and you can get the job done.
But obviously your teacher is certain that you are capable of doing more. You probably exert just enough effort to finish, or even to finish well. You probably have much greater abilities than you realize, because you don’t do your best, you just do enough to get by.
One day, you’ll hit your stride, and decide to do your best. When that happens, you’ll probably surprise yourself at how well you can do.
