The phrase is from french “double” and “to hear” – a phrase that can mean two things. Usually the second meaning is based on a pun or slang term. For example, the title of Shakespeare’s play “Much Ado About Nothing” is a double entendre based on “nothing” being a slang term during his time for “vagina” – like much of Shakespeare’s humor, it was a sex joke.
