Hyphen. Also, informally called a “dash.”

Riya knows her stuff and is absolutely correct that there are the dash, the n-dash and the m-dash, and that they all serve different functions. But, the dash–the shortest of the three and the most widely used, certainly by all of us–is synonymous with the hyphen, I think.

If it separates 2 parts of a single word, it’s a hyphen. If it separates two words as in billy-bob, it’s a dash. In typing, a dash is 2x as long as a hypen.

It’s proper name is a hyphen but it’s commonly referred to as a dash.

When it is used between two words it is a hyphen, when it is used to replace something it is a dash.

Hyphen.

It is often confused with the dashes ( –, —, ― ), which are longer and have different functions.
