They are more present in the physical world, rather than being “in their heads”. More concrete-minded than abstract-minded. Obviously it’s an advantage for a pilot to be more tactile by nature rather than an “idea person”.

A person can be intelligent and yet not an intellectual. In other words, intellectual performance does not necessarily go hand-in-hand with “being an intellectual.”

An intellectual is a person who uses his or her intelligence to work, study, reflect, speculate, or ask and answer questions about a wide variety of different ideas.

Intelligence is a general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience.

That the person is not smart, ignorent of a subject, not highly schooled in education, or do not use their mind to work things out.

Perhaps it means that they are not inclined towards intellectual pursuits; they are intelligent, but not schollars.
