What are some unusual ways to end a personal letter?
Favorite Answer
“Yours faithfully” — to someone who is not even an acquaintance.
“Yours truly” — to an acquaintance.
“Yours very truly” — to a friend.
“Yours obediently” — to one’s superior in an organization, or to a customer of a company.
“Your obedient servant” — from a civil servant (e.g., tax officer) to a citizen. No kidding, I did not make this up.
There were quite bizarre last paragraphs that preceded such endings when the letter was from a civil servant. Here are two:
“I have the honour to be, sir,”
“I beg to have the honour to be, sir,”
(British spellings — only the British and their colonial subjects spelled that way.”
He wrote “Peace, Love, and Animal Crackers,”
to which I responded “Peace, Love, and… ah, Green Tea”
Then he wrote, “War, Notlove, and Jones Soda,”
which got “Serenity, Affection, and Harmony” in return. I guess it’s a sort of game now.
Some others:
GaP or Grace and Peace
May the Force Be With You (Star Wars)
Keep on rockin’
Remember, you can’t stop the signal! (Firefly and Serenity)
Namarie (“goodbye” in Tolkien’s Elvish)
Live Long and Prosper (Star Trek)
Hope these have given you some ideas?
