I find that any use of high-order language and polysyllabic utterances garners an accusation of obfuscation amongst the illiterati. (Although they don’t use that word, tending more towards “Huh?”) If you are looking for a list of words that are likely to confuse, befuddle, and frustrate the average listener, just pick up the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary, (Wear a weightlifters belt, it is a bit weighty) and discard almost anything over 2 syllables. Your own usage in your question indicates that you would be amongst the befuddled in a conversation amongst my friends and myself.

These days, use any word of three or more syllables, and you’ll likely confuse the listener.

So how about: polysyllabic?
