The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says that a person has the right against self incrimination, so when someone pleads the fifth, they are exercising their right to keep their mouth shut when questioned.

There is no rule against text writing on here, but it would make it a whole lot easier to understand you if you were to write your questions and answers out completely.

And Ed, you know exactly what it means.

I know that this is America where English is becoming a 2nd language, but would it kill you to write your sentence out properly?– What does it mean when someone says “I plead the 5th?” Several ppl have already correctly described the 5th amendment. At some trials, you will hear the defendant say: “I decline to answer that question based on my rights as defined by the 5th amendment of the US constitution.” In other words, a person cannot be forced to testify against himself. OTOH, that person can still be convicted based on testimony from another person. When ppl say “I plead the 5th” it generally means that they don’t want to answer your question especially if you ask them a question about their weight, sex life, etc.

“The Fifth” refers to the 5th Ammendment of the American Constitution which says that a person has the right to refuse to respond to a policeman’s queries on the grounds that the response(s) may tend to incriminate the responder. i.e. If the response(s) can be used to incriminate the responder, they will be so used in any and all legal proceedings.

When someone says it in general conversation…they are saying they refuse to answer because they might incriminate themselves. For example, a girl asks a guy “Does this make me look fat?” He might say “I plead the fifth!” because after much experience, he has learned no matter WHAT he says it may get him into trouble.

Oh , and no text messaging on here please. We actually write out our questions and answers.

Take into context the term “hooker”. Then apply “hook-up”. To ‘hook-up’ is a purposely ambiguous, equivocal word to describe almost any sexual action. Usually used to exaggerate or minimize what exactly happened. ‘Hook-ups’ can range from just making-out to going all the way downtown to pleasuretown. 🙂
